About Me

Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm a technology leader based in Memphis with 30(!) years spent planning, building, and shipping software — everything from small-scale internal tools to systems that enable you to check in to your hotel on your phone or move freight across the globe. Currently I'm a Sr. Product Development Manager / Enterprise Architect at an international logistics company, where I lead teams designing and building the applications that keep a global logistics network running.

What I do

I work at the intersection of architecture, engineering leadership, and "someone has to actually deliver this." Over the years that's meant:

  • Leading application architecture and platform decisions across large, distributed systems
  • Building and managing engineering teams, from requirements to production
  • Getting my hands dirty across the stack — Perl, JavaScript, Python, C#/.NET, you name it
  • Translating between "what the business needs" and "how do we give them what they don't even realize they need"

I spent the bulk of my career designing and building cutting edge solutions for the hospitality industry, and have enjoyed bringing that same creativity to bear on global logistics.

Why I do it

I love a good puzzle. More than that, I like finding creative solutions to those puzzles that others may not see. I'm an artist at heart, so I approach problems from a perspective not shared by many technologists. Applying that perspective to designing systems which solve real needs is deeply rewarding. More than two decades in, that's still the part that hooks me.

What I do when I'm not doing that

If I'm not at a keyboard, I'm probably on a stage, in a rehearsal hall, behind a camera, or playing music. Theatre, music, and photography scratch the same itch software does — creating something in your head and making it real for someone else to experience.

I've also been part of the MetaFilter community for a long time, which is where the "old internet" instincts come from — small, weird, thoughtful corners of the web over algorithmic feeds, every time.
